David Sturdee founded the Sturdee Group in 2016 with the goal of leveraging his collective strategy consulting, private equity, and operating experience to bring fresh perspective and energy to the biggest issues challenging the CEOs and Boards of mid to large sized companies.
Based in Toronto, Canada, David began his career in 1998 with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) where he led teams in the formulation of business strategies, serving clients in Canada, the U.S., Germany and Thailand. While with BCG David was selected as one of eight consultants worldwide to serve as Counsellor to BCG's Strategy Institute.
In 2001 David joined the Clairvest Group, a leading North American mid-market private equity firm with more than $1 billion under management. He served as Managing Director and led the firm's healthcare and life sciences practice. David also served as a Director on five portfolio company Boards. During his tenure, Clairvest's track record for exited and partially exited deals was a 24% IRR and 2.9x capital invested.
In 2012 David joined the senior management team at Morneau Shepell, at the time Canada's leading human resources and technology company (TSX:MSI, name changed later to LifeWorks, sold in 2022 to Telus). David joined as Executive Vice President, Strategy and Operational Effectiveness, reporting to the CEO. During his tenure, the company generated a total shareholder return that was 2.7x that of the S&P/TSX Index.
When he is not working, David is active in the community. Most recently he co-founded a university scholarship program for intelligent, motivated new Canadians who are highly likely to succeed at university but held back by a lack of financial resources. David has also served as Chair, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto as well as being a volunteer Big Brother and coach of his daughter's hockey team. He is also an avid traveller, having spent more than 24 months collectively living and traveling in 50+ countries in Asia, South America, Central America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. His hobbies include running (completing all six World Marathon Majors), scuba diving (PADI Divemaster), skiing, mountain biking, dirt biking, and surfing.
David is married with two beautiful daughters. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toronto.
